The visual part of the presentation was supposed to be not more then a minute or so, and all this was supposed to be done within a week's time. To complicate things further it had to follow the PPP slides.

So, basically it was a visual replacement of the usual power point presentation which I was supposed to follow diligently but at the same time it was expected to have that extra feel and sense of corporeality. But a deadline of just one week leaves little space for creative imagination and hardly provides the time required for experimentation.

In such a short notice we had no other option by to stick the guns in blender and get the thing right at the very first take.

The most complicated part was the aerator section which involved a heavy use of fluid dynamics and particle system, so it was the first to be engaged with.

Anyway, the presentation turned out to be to their satisfaction though they could not believe that the last clip where the the clean water is shown flowing into the a muddy canal or gutter was actually created in blender. They thought I had used real water footage and composited it over the stream. But it was all created in blender. Basically the water was animated with blender's fluid simulation and a mask was created in gimp to allow the clean water to blend in with the muddy and dirty stream.

The motion graphics might not be one of the usual eye candy's. But then, ultimately, delivering the goods at short notice and to clients satisfaction is all that counts. And like the fabled chetak, blender has the tools, the necessary horse power and that rare ability to rescue you from the otherwise overwhelming and impossible deadlines.

Please note that: These are separate clips and are supposed to be played at various intervals, but for the sake of convenience I have joined them all into one.

Speed Post

I did these Ads in Blender for India Post
There were total of four Ads, two 10 sec and two 20 sec ad.
The one shown here are 10 sec ad.

Speed Post Ad1 Done In Belnder It supports accurate DV capture and playback and is quite similar to Sceneanalyser and boast features that are not available in any dedicated stand alone capture program. Apart from capture it also supports excellent encoding features.
HandBrake on the other hand is the portable media king. It also cuts excellent web optimized videos.
Compiling Both the programs is as easy as walk down the garden.
So what do you need to do first.

First and foremost follow the steps 1 to 3 as outlined here. If you have already done so, then Ignore this.
Now the Basics.
Download Source from:
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/kino/kino-1.3.4.tar.gz

Extract it to your favorite directory. Navigate into it. and then type:

./configure
make
sudo make install

That's it. you can now run Kino by simply typing kino in the terminal or from the menu.
So you thought it was complicated right. Hand Brake is even more easy.

Create a directory HandBrake:

mkdir HandBrake

navigate into it:

cd HandBrake
svn co svn://svn.handbrake.fr/HandBrake/trunk handbrake
./configure

Now navigate into the folder build

cd build
make -j4
sudo make install

That's it
You should now see the icon in your applications/Sound and Video menu.
Have fun.

Blender for large size prints

Well I ran into rendering issues, especially with lights and texture resolution in Blender version 2.4. I wanted to render at 10k but blender would crash and render out with weird artifacts. These would vanish at lower resolutions, so I had to render at a lower resolution of 3338 by 4108. I was unable to solve the problem, could be related to highly optimized builds with fastmath etc.
The Image was supposed to look like a new packaged deal, with Iron rods sticking out and the musical notes were supposed to be welded. These were supposed to be human size large poster mounted on trucks and large pole.
Apart from Blender and Gimp I ended up using Inkscape. Also all the textures were created in Inkscape at 10K resolution.

Blender for stills

<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302980118302359570" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_IEc1YAIUtu4/SZf4UjpfABI/AAAAAAAAAQ4/tTRN1oJu07I/s400/2+14_Photos+.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; The task at hand was to render a few clips from varying angles that would highlight how the final (actual mobile rig) would look. Once approved, actual mobile rigs would be created that would roam the country side giving performances and distributing promotional materials.
The client wanted to launch a pre-launch campaign in the city as well as towns and villages showcasing the new FM radio channel called "Dhamal" meaning "fun"

I was presented with two concepts The Idea was that the work should reflect the moods and expectation of the City; at the same time, another would cater to the old is gold pace of Indian villages. From the village point of view, they wanted the campaign vehicle to look like an old tube radio of the 50's and 60's, where as the one intended for the city was supposed to give a look and feel of ultra-modernity.

All clips were modelled, textured and rendered in Blender. Along with Blender Gimp was extensively used. Blender version 2.4 or may be (don't remember exactly) 2.41 was utilised running on Fedora. All clips were rendered in 1920 by 1080 resolution.

Two recent test renders In blender for a friend

Ok, The Idea was to pre-visualize the stalls and seating, It was not intended to be photo realistic, but just enough to catch the mood of the occasion and how things would look, that is, the stall facade etc.
The Left represent the traditional Rajasthani stall where as on the right is ultramodern Goa with its seafood.
Completely modelled and rendered in blender using the internal renderer with no ray tracing and ambient occlusion. With it you can paint like a pro. But there are no easy ready to use compilation available, so you need to compile this beauty on your own.
To do so, you need to do three things. First you need to download Gimp source files. Second, you need to apply gimp-for-painters patch and third, you need to compile and copy gimp-paint-studio to the compiled gimp configuration folder.
So lets get going.

First and foremost you need to execute steps 1 to 3 as detailed in Compiling Blender2.5 (if you haven't already done so)

As said above, first you need to download Gimp source files. You can download it from: ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/v2.6/gimp-2.6.7.tar.bz2

Second you download the patch from: http://sourceforge.jp/projects/gimp-painter/downloads/41325/gimp-painter--20090715.diff/

Third you download gimp-paint-studio from here: http://code.google.com/p/gps-gimp-paint-studio/

Now fire up your terminal and create a folder called gimptemp: mkdir gimptemp. Navigate into the newly created folder by typing cd gimptemp. Now copy all the three downloaded files using the file-manager in it. Right click on gimp-2.6.7.tar.bz2 and select extract here. This will create a gimp-2.6.7 folder and extract the file into it. You can also extract by typing tar -xjf gimp-2.6.7.tar.bz2 in the terminal.
Now do the following to patch Gimp: (provided that the file gimp-painter—20090715.diff is in the gimptemp folder).
Now do the following:
|

cd gimp-2.6.7

patch -p1 < ../gimp-painter--20090715.diff

|
This will patch the Gimp source file that you had just extracted in that folder
Now type the following in the terminal:
|

./configure CFLAGS='-O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -funroll-all-loops -ffast-math -march=native -mtune=native -mmmx -msse -msse2 -msse3 -mssse3 -mfpmath=sse -funsigned-char -fno-strict-aliasing'

|
Once done type the following:
|
sudo make -j8
|
The -j8 flag will use all the available cpu for compiling and this should considerably speed up your compilation time. If you have only a dual cpu, use -j3 and if you only have one cpu just type sudo make.

After it has compiled (hopefully without any errors) its time to install.
Type the following in the terminal
|
sudo make install
|
Your Gimp Painter is now ready for use, to further enhance its power, its time to install the "gimp-paint-studio" into the gimp configuration folder.
Right click on the downloaded file GPS 1_2_7z.7z or if you downloaded GPS 1_2_winrar.rar from http://code.google.com/p/gps-gimp-paint-studio/downloads/list and select extract here.
It is a good Idea to download the GPS manual too as well as the videos from the same site.
Now open the newly created folder GPS 1_2 and select and copy everything from there into the
.gimp-2.6
folder.
The .gimp-2.6 folder is a hidden folder that resides in your home folder directory. To open it, go to your home folder and press Ctrl+H or view->show hidden files to show this hidden folder. (you can also navigate by typing
cd ~/.gimp-2.6
in the terminal).
Double click to open
.gimp-2.6
folder and copy everything from GPS 1_2 into it. You can also read the manual for further instructions.

Now that you have installed everything, you can fire-up you new Gimp painter by simply typing gimp in the terminal. Your new Gimp executable should be in the "user/local/bin" folder, so go ahead and create a new launcher for your newly created gimp-painter from the panel or the application menu and now you can launch it by simply clicking its icon.
Alternatively you can open a new terminal and type gimp or cd /usr/local/bin
and then type
./gimp-2.6
and that should fire up you newly compiled gimp painter.

That's it. Enjoy your new Gimp Painter.

Compiling MyPaint

Martin Renold's "MyPaint" is one of the best thing to happen on Linux and Opensource in general. From a long time, there was no dedicated painting application on linux that can match the power of OpenOffice, Firefox, Blender, Ardour, and Gimp. Krita OK. but it never worked out of the box and usually when it did, you had to compile the whole OS based of KDE to get it to work. But once it did, it was a beauty.

Recently we have seen a lot of effort by independent developers to bring the flow and feel of paint media to the available applications. Gimp painter is such an example. But Gimp is much more then a painting canvas, it is a photo retouching application primarily, though it can be extended and has been extended to do much more than that. On the other hand MyPaint is a minimalist's dream. Like Wings3d, it hides its real power and in return gifts you the whole of your monitor's real estate for your simple joy and pleasure of painting.

To put it simply, MyPaint is a raster based paint engine that aims to simulate real world paint media and pencils, and to achieve this, it provides a fully customizable dynamic brush (painting and brushing engine) which can be tweaked to your hearts content. Now, Inspite of all its technical achievements, It is in fact surprisingly simple and easy to use. So easy that even my cousins 3 years old daughter was painting from the word go. (be careful though with your stylus as they can easily be damaged by kids and the kids in return can easily hurt themselves with it. so stay close to them.)

Also please note that MyPaint does not seek to replace Gimp. But rather works in conjunction with and in return compliments its power and capability's. As you work in it, you will find yourself moving between the two. Allright, time to compile your own MyPaint.

Compiling MyPaint:

Compiling MyPaint is just like typing 123. Just follow these steps and you will see how easy it is to compile it from the daily builds, so that you are always on that cutting edge of development. Compiling daily builds also makes you a collaborator in one sense as you test drive the latest developers copy and if you discover any bugs, you submit a bug report which in return solidifies and strengthens the software.

Step 1: Install the dependency's or just go here: Compiling Blender2.5 and simply copy and paste all of them. (Its a lot to go by even though 'mypaint' only needs a few. But as we will be compiling a whole bunch of advanced multimedia software's, I have gathered all of them together for easy one time install. Later we will compile the whole enterprise class OS with rt kernel all built ground up for speed and performance.) To warn you, I don't have a technical background and don't know any programming, not a bit of it, and so, if I can do it, so can you.

Step 2: Now, fire up the terminal and create a directory "MyPaint" by typing:
mkdir MyPaint
. Navigate to the just created folder by typing:
cd MyPaint.

Step3: Type the following in the terminal to download the latest builds by typing:

git clone git://gitorious.org/mypaint/mypaint.git

Step4: Navigate to the folder mypaint by typing:
cd mypaint
and type:
scons
to start the compilation process.

This should create the necessary files needed to run MyPaint. Infact you can now run this beauty by simply typing
./mypaint
in the terminal and it should blossom right in front of your eyes, demanding, that you start pouring your dreams instantly onto the canvas and have it all magically transformed into reality by the spirit of your creativity.

You can now create a launcher to run the program from its default compiled location and run it from there.

To install do the following.

sudo scons prefix=/usr/local install

Now you should get an icon/link in your Application/Graphics menu.

You can also run it by typing
mypaint
in the terminal or create a launcher on your desktop or panel for quick start.

That's it, enjoy painting :)

The Danger of Over Optimizing Blender

Recently one of the studios wanted me to rig, animate and render a train model that they had purchased. The project was supposed to be done on Houdini, but I insisted that It can be done faster in Blender. Any way I did some render test to compare Blender's Internal renderer with Houdini's Mantra and Mantra was way fast, so I tried some compilation tricks to optimize blender as much as possible with surprising results. I was getting almost the same speed as Mantra which is an Enterprise class renderer comparable to Renderman and its like.

But speed is gained at the cost of subtle artifacts.

Here are the comparison of the two renders. One is rendered with slightly optimized build and the other with aggressively optimized build with -fastmath and all that.

My render times were like this: (Mantra 59 seconds)

1 ] With Blender from the Blender foundation: Rendering time 1 minute 31 seconds.

2 ] With optimized compile : Rendering time 1 minute 14 seconds

3 ] With highly optimized build : Rendering time 1 minute 3 seconds

Between one and two there was no difference in quality.

But between two and there, you start seeing the dreaded artifacts.

Here are the images from two and three. Watch the clips closely. Its not that hard and you will instantly catch several artifacts. some glaringly obvious. (Ignore the Jpeg Artifacts as I have compressed it for net, but the artifacts that I am speaking about are not Jpeg or any compression artifact, they are urrrrm very obvious)

Without: Without Errors

Errors: With Errors

.

How to Gamma Calibrate your Monitor for 3d and Compositing work on Linux.

Gamma is the key to highend colorcorrection and color grading. It is the most secret of secrets and knowing or not knowing about breaks or makes a compositors carrier.

On the other hand calibrating your monitor is actually quite simple. All you need is compile and install Monica or GammaPage and use the notes that comes with it. Calibrating the color of the clip to match the color grade of the human gamma scale needs a color grading software and has nothing to do with monitor gamma directly cause most monitor cannot show all the grades and so all transformations happens in mathmatical space. Nevertheless withought a gamma calibrated monitor you are much more in the dark and it is very dangerous to work with high color Films and clips on an unclibrated monitor. AND THIS IS A WARNING.

To download the monica or gammapage source click here. Monica GammaPage.

Uncompress and extract the source

Navigate to its folder and simply type:

make

and

make install

Now you can run monica by simply typing monica in the terminal.

Now comes the tough part.

If your minotor allows, then set it to 6500K.

Now fire up the calibrater by typing monica in the terminal.

You will see 4 windows on the top (Luma and RGB) and a Gamma scale chart below them.

Adjusting you monitor Gamma means simply adjusting the slider till the lines in the Gamma chart almost flattens.

The best way to do it is by sitting parallel about 2 metre to the monitor eyelevel (change of eyelevel affects gamma so keep that in mind)

Now start adjusting the sliders till the difference in (Gamma scale chart) grades dissapear or atleast merge. On a good monitor they will almost flaten. But if it doesnot, no problem, just get it as close as possible and then hit exit and save.

Repeat these steps on other monitors so that you get consistent gamma level always on all workstation.

GammaPage is even simpler to run. simply download, extract and in the terminal run: python setup.py install

For example if you have extracted it in: /home/username/Installers/gammapage-0.5.1/ type cd /home/username/Installers/gammapage-0.5.1 to navigate to its folder.

then simply type: sudo python setup.py install

It will build and install the application. Now all you have to so is type: GAMMApage and it will launch the application.

Follow the steps above as you did with monica.

Click on the Help button at the bottm for getting a hang on what it is doing.

There is a good discussion on the topic at: When to apply gamma correction?

Also visit the wiki and download and read this pdf

Some of the Good books to start understanding linear and logarithmic color space and what every 3d artist and a compositior should know.

The Art and Science of Digital Compositing. But many users who come from Premiere and Avid background find blender’s non-traditional work-flow a bit tedious, though it is still your best bet when you have to edit in one of those big formats like OpenEXR and others. Believe me, there is nothing like Blender or even Cinelerra when it comes to the big formats and pure 64 bit editing on a multiprocessor ready machine loaded with 8gb of ram. (I am exaggerating a bit, but it is also true in one sense)

Blender is rapidly becoming the darling of open-source community. All credits goes to Ton, a Zen like mature Jedi Master who also happens to be a born leader. On the other hand, Cinelerra has not seen the flocking that blender has experienced over the years inspite of the great sacrifices committed by Heroine Warrior to get this master piece to the world of open-source. Nevertheless I have worked on it and it is quite stable and versatile. Some of its effects as better than what Adobe Premiere and even what AfterEffects has to offer, for example it has an excellent De-interlace filter and excellent color-correcter that works in floating point and grants instant white balance. It has instant save and almost total recover in the case of a crash. It has a motion tracker and animated spline or vector mask like the one in afterfx (though not as advance) add background rendering and built in support for a rendering farm crunching 2K and 4K resolution in pure 32bit floating point color space and you have at your fingertip the power to match and finish any film in any format you could imagine. The problem is that Cinelerra inspite of its potential and proven record (by in-house production houses) has not attracted the right kind of OpenSource enthusiasts and its developments has stagnated over the years. If only it can attracts good coders, these little things that it lacks can easily be enhanced to match the industry standards.

The lack of Capture cards (though you can write your own drivers for one and Aja Kona supports Linux directly as Industry greats like Flame, Smoke and others rely primarily on Linux and Aja for their video needs, thus Kona can be made to run on Linux as done by some independent production companies and doing so has its advantage as Kona transforms Cinelerra into a pure 64bit HD crunching machine. To top that Blackmagic Decklink now has Linux drivers and has promised a superb capture and playback utility and to quote them “With Media Express 2.0 on Linux, it’s possible to build a very powerful and low cost creative workstation for broadcasters and post production customers who want to take advantage of the emerging creative tools on the Linux platform.” ) On the other hand for not so fancy user such as us, Cinelerra is not so intuitive when it comes to capture videos and so most Linux users depend on Kino for DV and DV-Grab for Hdv capture. This is not a problem as Kino has an excellent capture module and almost matches Scenalyzer Live in its capability's and also provides an excellent color correcter and one can in no time quickly assemble a rough edit.
Infact you can assemble a rough edit faster than what you can do in Avid or Finalcutpro. Once you are satisfied with your rough edit, the files can then be imported into Cinelerra for fine-tuning and audio splicing.

Any way lets not waste our time and quickly compile our own latest builds. (I am using Fedora 10)

Follow the Steps 1 to 3 as shown in Compiling Blender2.5

Step4

In the terminal type

|

mkdir Cinelerra

|

Step5

Continue in the terminal by typing cd Cinelerra navigating to the newly created directory Cinelerra and get the latest build on to your system by typing as follows:

|
cd Cinelerra

|

and

|

git clone git://git.cinelerra.org/j6t/cinelerra.git cinelerra
|

Step6

You will notice that it has created a directory cinelerra under the present Cinelerra directory. Now its time to navigate into it by typing:

|
cd cinelerra

|

and run

|

./autogen.sh

|

Step7

This is a crucial step so do it right. Once inside the cinelerra directory, type the following, or simply copy and past there and hit enter to run.

|

./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-opengl CFLAGS='-O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -funroll-loops -march=native -mtune=native -mmmx -msse -msse2 -msse3 -mssse3 -mfpmath=sse'

|

Step8

Once it has configured the make file, without any errors, it is time to compile this Beast
(also note that the -j8 works best for quad processors and -j3 for dual. You don't need this option on a single processor machine so you may simply type 'make' but if your are one of those who has the latest quadcore's do the following.)

|
make -j8
|

Step9

Allow make to complete its job, (hopefully without any errors)and once done, Its time to install this Baby
Type these in the terminal and press enter

|
sudo make install
|
or
|
su
(your password)
make install
|

This will install Cinelerra on the disk and an Icon will appear on Application Sound and Video Menu

Step10

Type this and enter (need to be done only once)

|
ldconfig
|

Step11

Do this to remove the nag before you start Cinelerra but it is not necessary.

|

su

(your password)

echo "0x7fffffff" > /proc/sys/kernel/shmmax

exit

|
If you want to remove the above message permanently, so the following:
sudo gedit /etc/sysctl.conf

and at the end of this file add these following lines

kernel/shmmax=0x7fffffff

Save the file, close the text editor and then type
sudo sysctl -p

It should now hopefully be permanently gone.

In Cinelerra navigate to Settings, Go to Preferences and in Playback Audio Driver select ESound and set port to 7007

In the Video Driver section on the bottom chose X11-XV or if you happen to do a lot of masking and perspective jobs, try X11-OpenGL. Usually X11-XV works well for most of your needs.

That's it. Enjoy video editing.

PleaseNote: Also you will greatly benefit by using this utility "IMG2LIST - Cinelerra List Generator" in conjunction to Blenders output.
